Governorship Race
By Stanley Nwanosike
Enugu, Aug. 31, 2026 (NAN) Gov. Peter Mbah of Enugu State faces 14 other candidates in the 2027 governorship election.
The candidates are drawn from various political parties seeking to unseat Mbah and control the state’s government house.
This is contained in the list of governorship candidates displayed on Monday at the Enugu State headquarters of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
The document contains the personal credentials of all 15 candidates contesting the state’s top political position.
Mbah, the incumbent governor, is contesting under the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Chief Uchenna Nnaji of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is among those challenging Mbah for the governorship seat.
Other major contenders include Chief Chinyeaka Ohaa of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) and Chief Obodoeze Ocho of the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
The list also names Mr Edwin Alor of Accord and Prof. Jehu Nnaji of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP).
Mr Okwudilichukwu Ugwu represents the Labour Party (LP), while Mr Nnamdi Ugwu is the candidate of the Democratic Leadership Alliance (DLA).
Other candidates are Mr Anthony Udeani of the Young Progressives Party (YPP) and Mr Afamefuna Ani of the Action Peoples Party (APP).
Mr Elvis Ugwoke of the Zenith Labour Party (ZLP) and Mr Friday Iloka of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) are also contesting.
The remaining candidates are Mr Nnamdi Omeje of the Action Democratic Party (ADP), Mr Ken Ikeh of the Allied Peoples Movement (APM).
Chief Obioma Nnamani of the Because Of Our Tomorrow (BOOT) Party completes the 15-candidate field for the election.
Political activities have intensified, with candidates reportedly engaging stakeholders and elder statesmen ahead of the 2027 election.
Mbah is expected to campaign on his administration’s projects and social interventions as he seeks another term in office.
His administration is banking on a government source described as “verifiable projects and social interventions impacting the people” as key strengths ahead of the election.
The contest is therefore shaping up as a crowded race, with Mbah facing candidates seeking to wrest control of Enugu from the APC. (NAN)
