Senators Victor Umeh and Tony Nwoye have emerged as consensus candidates of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) for Anambra Central and Anambra North Senatorial districts ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Both lawmakers, who previously represented their districts in the Senate under the Labour Party before moving to the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and later to the NDC, were unopposed in Friday’s primaries. They will fly the party’s flag in the January 16, 2027, presidential and National Assembly polls.
For Anambra South, industrialist Chief Ebuka Onunkwo secured the NDC ticket after a competitive primary involving three other aspirants.
Onunkwo, CEO of Sea Horse Lubricants Nigeria Limited, polled over 95% of votes in several local government areas. In Ekwusigo LGA, he scored 1,556 votes against Col Jeff Onyejegbu (Rtd) who had 56. In Orumba North, he secured 831 votes to Winston Udeh’s 7. Nnewi South saw Onunkwo win 1,209 votes, with Udeh, Onyejegbu, and Emma Chikelo recording 62, 17, and 10 votes respectively. In Ihiala LGA, he garnered 697 votes against 37 by former House of Representatives member, Hon. Chuma Nzeribe.
Onunkwo, a former APGA member, had earlier indicated interest in the August 16, 2025, Anambra South Senatorial by-election to replace the late Senator Ifeanyi Uba but stepped down for APGA’s Chief Emma Nwachukwu, who won the seat.
Speaking after his victory, Onunkwo said his move to the NDC fulfilled a promise to supporters to contest and represent their interests in the Senate. He pledged to sponsor bills on economic opportunities, youth empowerment, and community development.
The primary results remain provisional pending ratification by the party’s leadership.
The exercise was conducted through Option A4, with accreditation of registered members followed by voting. The party also produced 11 candidates for the House of Representatives and 30 for the State House of Assembly.
NDC State Chairman, Hon Ikem Uzoezie, described the process as peaceful, transparent, and credible, commending aspirants for their sportsmanship.
Speaking for the winners, Onunkwo said the candidates share a determination to “take the State to the next level” through “populist representation.”
