Residents of Okpoko in Ogbaru Local Government Area of Anambra State have expressed optimism over the commencement of work on the long-awaited desilting of the Sakamori Gutter, a major drainage channel blamed for worsening flooding in the community.
The desilting exercise, approved by Anambra State Governor, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, commenced on Monday, July 27, with ALITHO Construction Company mobilised to the Obodoukwu Road axis of Okpoko to begin the work.
The project is part of the state government’s efforts to tackle flooding and other environmental challenges, while improving public health and protecting lives and property in affected communities.
Three additional contractors are expected to join the operation as the government moves to accelerate the work and ensure its completion within the scheduled period.
Speaking during a visit to the project site, the Chairman of Ogbaru Local Government Area, Hon. Kenneth Akwuobi, described the intervention as a significant development for Okpoko, which has endured recurring flooding for several years.
Akwuobi commended Governor Soludo for responding to the concerns of residents and approving the desilting project, saying the intervention would address one of the community’s most persistent environmental problems.
He also praised the Commissioner for Works, Arc. Okey Ezeobi, for his role in facilitating the project, expressing confidence that the rehabilitation of the drainage channel would improve the free flow of water and reduce the risk of flooding.
According to him, the project is also expected to contribute to improved sanitation, safer surroundings and better access to roads within the community.
Residents of Okpoko have welcomed the development, describing it as a major relief after years of dealing with the consequences of flooding.
The recurring floods have reportedly affected homes and businesses, displaced families, disrupted movement and exposed residents to environmental and public health risks.
One of the residents, Comrade Anthony Okeke, commended the state government for commencing the project, describing it as the fulfilment of a long-standing demand by the people.
Okeke said the development demonstrated the importance of government responding to the concerns of communities and implementing projects capable of producing lasting improvements in people’s living conditions.
With work now underway, residents are hopeful that the desilting of the Sakamori Gutter will significantly improve drainage in Okpoko, reduce flooding and create a cleaner and safer environment for residents.
They also expressed hope that the intervention would improve road accessibility and contribute to the overall development and quality of life in the community.
