Nnenna Ukeje: Peter Obi’s concern was party litigations, not Atiku or ADC

Former member of the House of Representatives and chieftain of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Hon. Nnenna Ukeje, has explained that former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi distanced himself from the ADC coalition because of ongoing legal disputes within the party, rather than any personal disagreement with Atiku Abubakar or the ADC itself.

Speaking during an interview on Arise TV on June 4, 2026, and was monitored by our correspondent in Onitsha, Ukeje addressed the challenges facing opposition parties as preparations for the 2027 general elections continue. She noted that the ADC has recently faced leadership-related court cases that have created uncertainty within the party.

According to Ukeje, Obi made it clear that his reservations were not about Atiku or the ADC platform. She quoted him as saying, “I have no problem with Atiku or the ADC, but with the party litigations.”

She explained that politicians seeking a stable platform ahead of major elections are often discouraged by unresolved legal disputes and leadership controversies. Such uncertainties, she said, can affect confidence in a political party’s ability to effectively compete in elections.

Ukeje further observed that internal litigations have become a recurring challenge for many political parties in Nigeria, particularly opposition groups. She argued that prolonged legal battles often distract parties from focusing on policy alternatives and effective governance proposals.

Despite these challenges, Ukeje expressed optimism that ongoing discussions among opposition leaders would eventually strengthen unity and cooperation. She stressed the need for political actors to prioritize national interests, especially in addressing the country’s economic and security concerns.

She concluded by stating that coalition-building remains an ongoing process and that further negotiations are expected in the coming months. According to her, the opposition’s success in the 2027 elections will depend on its ability to resolve internal disputes, overcome divisions, and present a united front to Nigerians.
