BREAKING: NLC Pauses Strike as Tense Minimum Wage Negotiations Hit Critical Point

In a significant development, the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has announced that it will not resume its suspended nationwide strike on Tuesday, as negotiations with the federal government over the minimum wage reach a critical stage.

Addressing the ongoing International Labour Conference in Geneva, Switzerland, NLC President Joe Ajaero revealed that the tripartite committee has presented two proposals to President Bola Tinubu, setting the stage for a crucial decision. The proposals include a minimum wage of N62,000 from government and employers, and N250,000 from labour.

As the one-week window for continued negotiation expires on Tuesday, Ajaero’s statement suggests a possible extension of the negotiation period. The NLC had earlier suspended its two-day nationwide strike last week, pending the outcome of the negotiations.

With the nation holding its breath, the labour union’s demand for a new minimum wage for workers hangs in the balance. The NLC has reiterated its commitment to fighting for the rights of Nigerian workers, and has warned that it will resume the strike if an agreement is not reached with the government.
