Lagos, Sept. 4, 2026 (NAN) The seventh Adewale Isa Foundation Lagos Tennis Tournament has reached its decisive stage, with Nigeria’s emerging tennis talents battling for coveted titles.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the tournament is taking place at Lagos Mainland Tennis Club, National Stadium, Surulere.
Held under the theme, ‘Impacting Lives Through Tennis and Education,’ the competition has attracted promising players from across Nigeria.
The tournament has produced fiercely contested matches, with the young athletes displaying impressive skills, determination and sportsmanship throughout the various rounds.
The semifinals generated considerable interest as players fought for places in the finals across different age categories.
Among the standout performers is Heman Afaramai, who defeated Godwin Akinfumiloye 6-3, 6-2 to book his place in the final.
Afaramai, winner of the boys’ U-16 event at the CBN Junior Tennis Championship, said the tournament had boosted his confidence.
“I am very happy to have reached the final. I have worked hard for this and I will give my best to win the title,” he said.
He said the tournament had helped him grow by providing opportunities to compete against talented players from different parts of Nigeria.
“Reaching the final is a good achievement for me, and I hope to win the title,” Afaramai said.
The youngster praised the Adewale Isa Foundation for creating opportunities for young athletes to showcase their talents and develop their passion.
In the girls’ U-14 category, Mabubat Rasaki overwhelmed Adesimi Olaniyan 6-1, 6-0 in straight sets to advance to the final.
Chisimdi Adamobonu also secured her place in the U-14 girls’ final after defeating Karina Opuene 6-4, 6-4 in a competitive encounter.
In the girls’ U-16 category, Mofifunoluwa Atilola defeated Josphine Musa 6-2, 6-1 to advance to the next stage.
Salvation Alex also progressed after overcoming Prosper Olimoi 7-5, 7-6 in another closely contested U-16 girls’ encounter.
The U-12 girls’ category produced equally exciting contests, with Ginika Uwaleke defeating Mariam Bello 2-6, 6-3, 10-7 to reach the final.
Grace Oritingbeni also advanced after beating Amirah Adebayo 6-0, 6-2 in a commanding U-12 girls’ performance.
In the boys’ U-12 category, Godwin Afaramai defeated Unity Alex 6-3, 6-7, 10-8 after a tightly fought contest.
Miracle Yakubu also booked his place in the U-12 boys’ final by defeating Raphael Awi 6-2, 6-2.
In the boys’ U-14 category, Testimony Friday defeated David Igboviovia 6-6, 2-6, 10-6 to progress to the final.
Goodluck Tersoo also defeated Asamuyi Idehen 6-3, 6-2 in another U-14 boys’ encounter.
The tournament’s final stages are expected to provide further opportunities for the young players to test their abilities under competitive conditions.
Beyond determining champions, the competition is designed to strengthen grassroots tennis development and nurture players capable of representing Nigeria internationally.
The winners will receive quality tennis equipment to support their continued development and help them advance their budding careers.
The prizes are expected to motivate the participants to work harder while supporting the sustained growth of tennis at grassroots level.
The foundation’s annual tournament has continued to serve as a platform for discovering and promoting young tennis talents across Nigeria.
Its seventh edition has further demonstrated how structured competitions can provide emerging players with exposure, competitive experience and confidence needed for higher-level tennis.
With the finals now approaching, attention is focused on the youngsters seeking to crown their impressive campaigns with titles and emerge as the tournament’s new champions. (NAN)
