The Commissioner of Police in Anambra State, AIG Ikioye Orutugu, has commenced a statewide appreciation tour to thank stakeholders for their support following his promotion to the rank of Assistant Inspector-General of Police (AIG).
The development was disclosed in a statement issued on Monday by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, who said the visits form part of activities marking Orutugu’s transition from his role as Commissioner of Police in the state to his new assignment in the Nigeria Police Force.
The appreciation tour began with a courtesy visit to the palace of the traditional ruler of Awka Kingdom, Igwe Gibson Nwosu (Eze Uzu II of Awka), where the outgoing police commissioner expressed gratitude to the monarch, the people of Awka and residents across the state for their cooperation throughout his tenure.
Orutugu acknowledged the contributions of traditional rulers, community leaders, the Anambra State Government, other security agencies and members of the public to the successes recorded by the police command in combating crime and improving security across the state.
He stressed that sustaining peace and security requires continued collaboration among security agencies, traditional institutions and the public, urging residents to maintain their support for law enforcement agencies.
Responding, the traditional ruler congratulated Orutugu on his promotion, describing it as well deserved. He commended the senior police officer for his professionalism, dedication and commitment to improving security in Anambra State, while praying for greater success in his new office.
Orutugu assumed office as the 35th Commissioner of Police in Anambra on February 10, 2025, succeeding CP Nnaghe Obono Itam. During his tenure, he led several intelligence-driven operations against criminal elements and consistently promoted stronger cooperation between the police and communities in tackling insecurity.
His promotion to the rank of Assistant Inspector-General of Police was announced by the Police Service Commission on July 1, 2026, alongside 12 other commissioners of police. He was officially decorated with his new rank on July 21, 2026.
The ongoing appreciation tour is expected to continue with visits to other key stakeholders across the state before Orutugu formally hands over leadership of the Anambra State Police Command to his successor.
