Nigeria has recorded an impressive achievement on the international academic stage after two of its students secured places among the world’s top 10 performers at the 2026 Singapore International Mathematics Olympiad Challenge (SIMOC).
The competition, held in Singapore from July 17 to 21, attracted 2,285 participants from 1,113 schools across 40 countries, making it one of the world’s leading mathematics contests.
According to the Nigerian Director of the Singapore International Mathematics Contests Centre (SIMCC), Mrs. Josiah Mercy, Agu Chijindu Chukwuka of Grundtvig International Secondary School, Oba, Anambra State, emerged eighth overall in the Grade 7 Mathematics Olympiad Contest. He earned two gold medals and one bronze medal for his outstanding performance.
Another Nigerian, Okpere-Udo Hallel of Graceland International School, Port Harcourt, finished second globally in the Grade 10 Mathematics Olympiad Contest after winning one gold medal and one bronze medal.
Several other Nigerian students also distinguished themselves at the competition. They include Nwawulu Chimgozirim Kevin of Grundtvig International Secondary School, Stanley Iduate Samson of Graceland International School, and Adepetu Mofopefoluwa Oluwasemilore of Jephthah Comprehensive Secondary School, all of whom won gold medals in different Math Master Mind categories.
Mrs. Mercy described the students’ performances as a reflection of Nigeria’s growing academic excellence, noting that the success demonstrates the country’s ability to compete with the best globally when students receive quality education, proper mentorship, and the right support.
She added that the achievements further reinforce the potential of Nigerian students to excel in international academic competitions and bring pride to the nation.
