The Anambra State Executive Council has approved contracts worth over ₦1 billion for key development projects across the State as part of ongoing efforts to improve infrastructure and public services.
The approved projects include an ₦801 million contract for the construction of a floodwater diversion channel at Ezioko, Oko-Nanka in Orumba North Local Government Area, a ₦280 million contract for the supply and installation of medical equipment at the General Hospital in Oroma Etiti, and a ₦92 million contract for external works and landscaping at Nwafor Orizu College of Education, Nsugbe.
Speaking after the Executive Council meeting in Awka, the Commissioner for Information, Dr. Law Mefor, disclosed that the State government is also working on new legislation to protect public infrastructure and regulate the activities of scrap dealers.
According to him, the proposed law will require operators in the scrap business to obtain licenses, enabling effective monitoring and helping to curb vandalism and theft of public property.
Dr. Mefor further revealed that the council has resolved to develop a comprehensive mass housing policy aimed at addressing the increasing cost of house rents across the State.
The initiative is expected to encourage stronger public-private partnerships in the housing sector and improve access to affordable accommodation for residents.
In addition, the council approved a policy requiring all companies bidding for government contracts in Anambra State to provide proof of tax compliance as part of the procurement process.
