Gunmen on Sunday night killed two police officers in an ambush along the Amansea–Ndiora–Ndiukwuenu–Awa–Ufuma Road in Anambra State.

The officers were returning from an assignment when the assailants opened fire on them, killing two on duty.

A tricycle rider who witnessed the aftermath said he was returning from Ezira in Orumba South Local Government Area when he heard gunshots and turned back for safety.

“After the shooting subsided, I continued my journey and saw that the two police officers had already been gunned down,” he said, speaking on condition of anonymity.

Confirming the incident, Anambra State Commissioner of Police, CP Ikioye Orutugu, said the command has launched an investigation and intensified efforts to apprehend those behind the attack.

“A team of Police officers was returning from an assignment when they were ambushed by armed men who opened fire on them. In the process, we lost two officers,” Orutugu stated.

He added that he would visit the scene to assess the situation and review security measures aimed at preventing further attacks.

The Commissioner also urged motorists and residents to be vigilant around checkpoints.

“Whenever you approach a checkpoint without Police vehicles or clear police identification, you should exercise caution. Either turn back and alert the nearest police formation or immediately contact the police for assistance,” he warned.
