The Peace Corps of Nigeria has announced a comprehensive nationwide Personnel Re-validation Exercise, following a unanimous resolution passed by the Peace Corps Council, the organization’s highest decision-making body.

This was disclosed by the National Commandant of the Peace Corps of Nigeria, Dr. Dickson A.O. Akoh, during a press conference held on Wednesday in Abuja.

The mandatory exercise will cover all officers and men who have undergone training within the Corps from its inception in 1998 up to 2026. Officials describe it as a non-negotiable audit aimed at updating records, harmonizing human resource capacity with modern institutional standards, and verifying the current academic qualifications of personnel.

“Over the last nearly three decades, many of our officers have advanced their education, acquiring higher degrees, specialized certifications, and technical competencies that the Corps must now formally recognize,” the Council stated.

A key component of the exercise is the mapping of updated educational profiles to create an objective framework for merit-based promotions, specialized departmental deployments, and optimal utilization of the organization’s intellectual and professional assets.

In line with Nigeria’s current security architecture, the submission of the National Identification Number (NIN) has been made strictly compulsory for all personnel. The Council said integrating NIN into a centralized database will eliminate anonymity, prevent identity fraud, and provide assurance to state security agencies and the public regarding the integrity of its members.

“Every officer must be traceable, verifiable, and legally anchored to the national identity database, ensuring that our ranks remain untainted by elements inimical to national peace,” the statement read.

The re-validation exercise serves as the foundation for a wider set of structural reforms and reorganizations currently being implemented across the organization. According to the Council, outdated administrative structures are being dismantled to make way for a modern, agile, and highly disciplined body.

The reforms will affect operations from the National Headquarters down to Zonal, State, District, and Local Government Commands, with the goal of embedding efficiency and accountability at every level.

As a voluntary, youth-focused non-governmental organization, the Peace Corps of Nigeria said it is refining internal governance, streamlining its seven administrative departments, and tightening the operational command chain.

“The ultimate goal of this extensive reorganization is to strategically reposition the Peace Corps of Nigeria to advance its core values with renewed vigor and institutional legitimacy,” the Council said.

The Council stressed that participation in the exercise is completely mandatory and deadlines will be strictly enforced. Any officer or member trained between 1998 and 2026 who fails to present themselves, or fails to provide valid academic credentials and NIN, will automatically forfeit membership and be purged from the database.

“There will be no room for ghost personnel, inactive members, or unverified individuals within the reformed Peace Corps of Nigeria,” the Council warned.

The leadership expressed confidence that the reforms will reposition the organization as an elite, highly organized body capable of securing international partnerships, earning consultative status with global institutions, and commanding domestic respect.
