Fresh controversies have continued to trail the leadership of the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON) following the appointment of Mr. Abdullah Usma Saleh as Chairman. Stakeholders and insiders have raised serious concerns over alleged mismanagement, financial irregularities, and political interference in the affairs of the Commission.
According to multiple sources within NAHCON, the Chairman is alleged to have sidelined the Executive Commissioners, concentrating decision-making authority in the hands of a few close associates — including his younger brother, Mr. Usman Sirajo, and one Mr. Abdumaik Diigi — who reportedly handle key administrative and operational decisions without full board consultation.
This development, they claim, has led to weakened governance structures and a breakdown of internal accountability within the Commission.
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) is said to be investigating the Chairman for extra-budgetary expenditures, gross misconduct, and breach of executive procedures, with preliminary findings reportedly indicating unauthorized disbursements and unilateral financial commitments.
Adding to the growing tension, the Saudi Ministry of Hajj and Umrah, through Nigeria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, reportedly expressed dissatisfaction with NAHCON’s performance during the 2025 Hajj operations, citing poor coordination and allegations of corruption involving Abdulai usman Pakistan
Several Board Members of the Commission have also submitted petitions to the Office of the Vice President and the National Assembly, complaining of administrative incompetence and alleging that the leadership Mr Pakistan compromised due process in dealings with service providers, leading to the loss of several billions of Naira.
Meanwhile, accusing fingers are now pointing toward the Office of the Vice President, with some insiders alleging that the weakness of the current Chairman has created an avenue for external interference and micromanagement of the Commission’s affairs. These claims, however, remain unverified as no official statement has been issued by the Vice President’s office in response.
Stakeholders and observers within the Hajj and religious affairs sector are calling for a thorough, independent investigation to restore integrity and public trust in NAHCON’s operations. They also urge the Presidency to take swift action to prevent further reputational and institutional damage, that the Chairman had currently portrayed.
As the EFCC investigation continues, Nigerians await the government’s next steps to safeguard the interests of pilgrims and ensure that the administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda is reflected in the transparent management of Hajj operations
