Tensions are running high at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH) as staff, particularly Locum and Hospital Interns, are protesting the non-payment of their salaries for several months. The development has sparked outrage, with workers demanding immediate action from the hospital management.
According to reports, the staff have been working without pay for months, leading to financial stress and difficulties in meeting basic needs. The hospital management attributes the delay to the implementation of the Integrated Personnel Payroll Information System (IPPIS), but staff are demanding transparency and timely payments.
The delayed salaries have taken a toll on the staff, with many struggling to make ends meet. “When salaries stop, so do school fees, meals, and hope halt,” said a staff member. “Salary is a right, not a reward.” The situation has raised concerns about the well-being of healthcare workers who are essential to the hospital’s operations .
Experts say the situation at LUTH can be understood through various theoretical perspectives:
– Hospital workers feel under-rewarded, as they continue to provide essential health services without receiving their rightful salaries.
– The unwritten expectations between employer and employee are broken when management fails to fulfill basic expectations, such as timely payment.
– The imbalance in the relationship between staff and management is evident, as staff have fulfilled their obligations (labor) but have not received payment in return.
The staff of LUTH are demanding
– Staff want their salary arrears paid immediately.
– They seek transparency in salary payments and adherence to labor laws.
– Workers stress that delayed salaries are not just delays but denials of dignity.
The Chief Medical Director, Prof. Wasiu Adeyemo, has apologized for the delay and assured staff that salaries would be paid either on Friday, July 25, 2025, or Monday, July 28, 2025. However, staff are skeptical and demand immediate action.
The situation at LUTH highlights the importance of timely payment of salaries to employees. The hospital management must take urgent action to address the issue and restore trust with staff. As one staff member put it, “You can’t run a hospital on empty promises.”
