Residents of Osumoghu community in Ihiala Local Government Area of Anambra State have expressed excitement following a military operation that targeted suspected terrorist camps and hideouts in the area.
The operation, which reportedly took place over the weekend, was conducted by troops of the 185 Battalion, Lilu, Ihiala, under the command of Lieutenant Colonel Sunday Laleyi.
The military offensive, coordinated by a field operations officer, targeted locations allegedly occupied by armed groups that had previously subjected parts of the community to insecurity and forced many residents to flee their homes.
A resident, who spoke on condition of anonymity, commended the military for what he described as a successful operation, expressing optimism that the development would encourage displaced residents to return home.
According to him, the presence of the military battalion in neighbouring Lilu had already created pressure on the armed groups, with some of the suspected gunmen reportedly fleeing the area.
He described the latest operation as a major relief for the community, noting that the activities of the armed elements had severely disrupted social and economic life in Osumoghu.
The resident also appealed to indigenes of the community and neighbouring towns who had fled their homes because of insecurity to return, expressing hope that peace and normalcy would soon be restored.
During the operation, troops reportedly discovered and destroyed several suspected criminal camps and shrines. They also neutralised explosive devices allegedly planted by the armed group and recovered materials suspected to have been used in the manufacture of improvised explosive devices (IEDs).
The operation is expected to boost security confidence among residents and support efforts to restore lasting peace in Osumoghu and surrounding communities.
