A former Anambra State Governor and 2027 presidential candidate of the Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has denied authorship of a letter circulating on social media and purportedly addressed to the Obi of Onitsha, Igwe Nnaemeka Achebe.
The letter, dated September 19, 2026, and titled “The Future of Ndigbo is Bleak,” was purportedly an appeal to traditional rulers, political leaders and elders to promote unity among the people and encourage transparency in the handling of issues concerning Anambra State.
The document also referred to the ongoing controversy over the financial position of Anambra State and recent exchanges between Obi and the administration of Governor Chukwuma Soludo.
Among other things, the purported author called for the state’s financial records to be made available for scrutiny, urging that outstanding questions be addressed with documentary evidence.
The letter also appealed to Igbo leaders to ensure that political disagreements did not degenerate into divisions among the people, stressing the need to place the interests of Anambra State and the wider Igbo community above personal differences.
However, Obi has disowned the document, describing it as fake and saying the signature attached to it was forged.
In a statement issued on Saturday, Obi described the letter as “entirely false, malicious, and a fabrication by mischievous elements aimed at misleading the public.”
He urged members of the public and media organisations to disregard the document and not attribute its contents to him.
Obi said his attention remained focused on issues of national development and accountability, rather than what he described as fabricated publications.
The controversy comes against the backdrop of an ongoing disagreement between Obi and the Soludo administration over the financial obligations allegedly inherited by the Anambra State Government from Obi’s tenure, which ended in 2014.
While the state government has maintained that some outstanding obligations linked to external loan facilities from the period remain, Obi has disputed aspects of the government’s characterisation of his administration’s financial record.
The disputed letter reportedly carried the branding of “Movement Obi/Kwankwaso 2027” and had circulated widely on social media before Obi’s denial.
The development has further drawn attention to the continuing public debate over Anambra State’s finances and the political relationship between Obi and the present administration.
