Lagos, Aug. 29, 2026 (NAN) Some local councils in Lagos on Saturday intensified environmental sanitation activities, clearing drainage channels and apprehending a man for allegedly dumping refuse illegally.
The development was contained in separate statements issued by the information units of Agege Local Government and Orile-Age Local Council Development Area (LCDA) on Saturday.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the releases did not identify individual signatories.
Agege Local Government mobilised stakeholders for waste evacuation and a clean-up exercise across major corridors in the area, in line with the Lagos State monthly environmental sanitation exercise.
The two-hour exercise, which began at 6:30 a.m. and ended at 8:30 a.m., covered Agbotikuyo Junction, Sofunde, Oke-Koto and Agege Main Market.
According to the statement, a man was apprehended for allegedly dumping refuse on the median along Oke-Koto/Alfa Nla Road.
It said the waste was traced to Adenle Street, adding that the suspect was handed over to the Environmental Enforcement Team for appropriate action.
The council said the enforcement was part of efforts to curb indiscriminate waste disposal and sustain environmental cleanliness in the area.
The exercise was led by the Vice Chairman, Mr Sodiq Azeez, alongside the Leader of the Agege House of Legislators, Mr Adesina Haruna, and the Secretary to the Local Government, Mr Adaranijo Rasheed.
Azeez urged residents and traders to dispose of their waste responsibly and ensure that drainage channels remained free of refuse.
Similarly, the Chairman of Orile-Age LCDA, Mr Akinola Idowu, led cabinet members and legislators in a sanitation exercise across the LCDA.
Idowu said the exercise was aimed at promoting a cleaner, healthier and safer environment, while encouraging residents to take responsibility for the cleanliness of their surroundings.
“Let us come out and clean our surroundings. A clean environment is a collective responsibility,” he said.
The Vice Chairman of Orile-Age LCDA also participated in the exercise and called for sustained community participation in environmental sanitation.
The chairman reaffirmed the council’s commitment to environmental cleanliness and sustainable community development.(NAN)
