A 20-year-old man, identified as Pascal Ogbogu, has been arrested by the Anambra State Police Command for allegedly killing his 56-year-old father with a machete in Abatete, Idemili North Local Government Area of the state.
The incident reportedly occurred on the evening of Tuesday, August 25, 2026, after the suspect allegedly attacked his father before fleeing the scene.
According to the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, operatives from the Eziowelle Police Division mobilised to the scene following a distress call, with assistance from family members and members of the Abatete Vigilante group.
Ikenga said the victim was found dead in a pool of blood, with a deep machete wound to his throat. His remains were subsequently evacuated to a mortuary for preservation and autopsy.
The police spokesman added that Ogbogu, who reportedly escaped after the incident, was apprehended in the early hours of Wednesday, August 26, through a coordinated effort involving the police, vigilante personnel and members of the community.
The police said timely information provided by residents also played a significant role in locating and arresting the suspect.
The Commissioner of Police, CP Nnanna Oji Ama, commended the family, community members, police operatives and vigilante personnel for their prompt response and cooperation.
Ama stressed that effective community participation, timely sharing of information and collaboration between security agencies and residents remained crucial to protecting lives and property.
The Commissioner also condoled with the family of the deceased and directed that the case be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department for further investigation.
He assured the public that the investigation would be conducted professionally and thoroughly, in accordance with the law, while the suspect would be subjected to due process at the conclusion of the investigation.
