The American University of Nigeria (AUN) has received approval from the National Universities Commission (NUC) to introduce five new postgraduate programmes in Law and Economics, marking a significant milestone in the institution’s ongoing expansion of graduate education.
The approval takes effect from the 2026/2027 academic session, following the successful resource assessment conducted by the panels of expert from the NUC. The Commission confirmed that AUN possesses the necessary academic and material resources required to run the programmes.
The newly approved programmes are as follows, Master of Science (M.Sc.) in Economics, Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Economics, Postgraduate Diploma (PGD) in Law, Master of Laws (LL.M.) and
Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Law
This development is put in place expands AUN’s postgraduate portfolio and underscores the University’s sustained investment in academic excellence, research, innovation, and the training of professionals equipped to address contemporary national and global challenges.
The President of AUN, DR DeWaign Frazier described the approval as a major milestone in the University’s graduate education journey. Noted that it reflects the steady growth of AUN’s postgraduate programmes and their increasing contribution to research and scholarship.
“Over the past three years, AUN’s School of Graduate Studies has achieved record breaking enrolment, strengthening the University’s research output and influence across the region and the country,” he said.
The President also stated that the introduction of the new programmes would broaden the University’s academic impact while meeting the growing demand for advanced education in Law and Economics.
Frazier also said, “The addition of these programmes will not only boost enrolment but also expand AUN’s contribution to scholarship in these critical disciplines”.
Reacting to the development, the Dean of the School of Arts and Sciences, Professor Bolade Agboola, described the approval of the Economics programmes as a natural progression from the University’s well-established undergraduate programme.
“This is welcome news for us at AUN as it enables us to build on a strong B.Sc. Economics foundation”.
He expressed confidence in the University’s capacity to deliver quality graduate education, citing its experienced faculty and modern learning facilities.
While adding, he said, “With our top-notch faculty and excellent facilities, we are confident of producing M.Sc. and Ph.D. graduates who can compete globally in the field of Economics”.
The University is expected to admit its first cohort of students into the new programmes in the 2026/2027 academic session, creating expanded opportunities for advanced study, interdisciplinary research, and professional development.
