Human skeletal remains, including a skull, ribs and other bones, were discovered during an environmental sanitation exercise at Upper Iweka in Onitsha, Anambra State, raising concerns over a possible unresolved crime.
The remains were reportedly found on Saturday by members of the Anambra RATELS group while clearing overgrown vegetation in the area.
The discovery gained public attention after social media activist Martins Vincent Otse, popularly known as VeryDarkMan, shared details of the incident online. He suggested that the condition and location of the remains could indicate that the victim was murdered, dismembered and abandoned in the bush.
Although the exact circumstances surrounding the discovery remain unknown, the identity of the deceased has yet to be established, and there has been no official confirmation of the cause of death.
The incident has sparked concern among residents, with many expressing fears that the victim may have been reported missing by relatives who are still unaware of what happened.
VeryDarkMan also used the incident to highlight what he described as the country’s inadequate surveillance and crime-tracking systems, arguing that improved security infrastructure could help authorities detect and investigate such cases more effectively.
Security agencies are expected to investigate the discovery to determine the identity of the deceased, establish the cause of death and uncover how the human remains ended up at the location.
The incident has renewed calls for stronger surveillance measures, improved forensic investigations and more effective systems for tracing missing persons to ensure justice for victims of violent crimes.
