The House of Representatives joins all Nigerians in commemorating Democracy Day 2026 and celebrating twenty-seven years of uninterrupted democratic governance in our country.
This occasion honours the sacrifices of the men and women whose courage, patriotism, and commitment helped secure the democratic freedoms we enjoy today. It is also an opportunity to reflect on the progress we have made as a nation and renew our collective commitment to building a stronger, more prosperous, and more inclusive Nigeria.
Twenty-seven years of unbroken democratic practice is a significant national achievement. It demonstrates the resilience of our institutions, the enduring faith of Nigerians in democratic governance, and our collective determination to resolve differences through dialogue, representation, and the rule of law.
As the institution closest to the people and the foremost symbol of representative democracy, the House of Representatives remains committed to strengthening democratic governance through responsive legislation, effective oversight, and meaningful citizen engagement.
Over the past year, the House has contributed significantly to deepening Nigeria’s democracy through landmark legislative reforms, including the passage of comprehensive electoral reforms signed into law in February 2026, alongside other important legislative measures, motions, and parliamentary initiatives aimed at strengthening institutions, improving governance, and expanding democratic participation.
As Nigeria prepares for its 8th consecutive cycle of national elections since the return to democratic rule, we call on all Nigerians to participate peacefully and actively in the democratic process, for strong institutions and an engaged citizenry remain the enduring pillars of a thriving democracy.
Democracy is sustained not only by the ballots we cast, but by the values we uphold between elections.
The House of Representatives reaffirms its unwavering commitment to protecting democratic institutions, advancing the public interest, and ensuring that the voice of every Nigerian continues to find expression through representative government.
