Residents of Ogidi community in Idemili North Local Government Area of Anambra State have expressed concern following the discovery of an unauthorized settlement hidden within a forested area on the outskirts of the town.

The settlement was reportedly uncovered on Monday, May 18, by local vigilante members and community youths during a routine patrol.

According to community sources, a group of migrants believed to be from northern Nigeria had occupied a section of the bush and erected temporary shelters without the knowledge or approval of local authorities, traditional leaders, or landowners.

Initial reports suggest the occupants may have lived there for an extended period before the settlement was discovered. The development has raised questions among residents about how such a camp was established without attracting attention.

The incident has heightened fears over insecurity in the region, especially amid ongoing concerns about kidnappings and criminal activities in parts of the South-East.

Some community leaders warned that unmonitored camps in remote areas could pose security risks if left unchecked. They called for proper identification and screening of individuals found at the location while urging residents to remain vigilant.

A local leader, who spoke anonymously, described the situation as a wake-up call for improved community surveillance and information sharing.

Following the discovery, community leaders reportedly informed security agencies and local vigilante groups. Security personnel have since visited the area to assess the situation, dismantle unauthorized structures, and begin investigations into the purpose of the settlement.

Traditional rulers and local authorities in Idemili North have also advised residents, farmers, and landowners to promptly report suspicious activities or illegal structures in remote areas to help strengthen local security efforts.
