The Anambra State Police Command has advised residents to avoid resisting arrest or interfering with police investigations, warning that such actions could lead to violence, injuries, or even loss of life.
In a statement issued on Sunday, the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, urged members of the public to remain calm and cooperate with officers during arrest situations, even when they believe the arrest is unnecessary.
According to Ikenga, peacefully complying with an arrest shows respect for constituted authority and may help prevent confrontations.
He explained that resisting arrest could escalate tensions and expose both suspects and police officers to danger, including serious injuries or death.
The police spokesperson also reminded residents that suspects have the right to know the reason for their arrest and may politely request officers to identify themselves and state the unit or office they represent.
He further advised individuals being arrested to ask which police station they are being taken to so they can inform family members, friends, or legal representatives about their whereabouts.
Ikenga noted that in many cases, the presence of a complainant during an arrest indicates that the police are acting based on a formal complaint rather than personal motives.
He stressed that anyone who feels wrongly treated by officers should seek redress through lawful channels instead of engaging in confrontation.
The Command also warned members of the public against obstructing or interfering when another person is being arrested, stating that such actions could amount to obstruction of lawful duty.
According to Ikenga, encounters with the police should be seen as opportunities to build mutual understanding, respect, and cooperation between citizens and law enforcement agencies.
He reaffirmed the commitment of the Anambra State Police Command to protecting residents and maintaining a positive relationship with the public.
The spokesperson urged Ndi Anambra and other residents to remain law-abiding, security-conscious, and supportive of efforts to fight crime across the state.
He added that residents in need of police assistance can contact the Police PRO on 08039334002, the Command Control Room on 07039194332, or the Complaint Response Unit on 08069262121.
