A former Kano State Governor, Rabiu Kwankwaso has expressed support for the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC)’s decision to zone its 2027 presidential ticket to Southern Nigeria.

Speaking at the party’s national convention in Abuja on Saturday, Kwankwaso said the move reflects fairness, balance, and the party’s commitment to its power-sharing agreement.

According to him, the South should be allowed to complete an eight-year leadership cycle before the presidency returns to the North.

“I support the decision to zone the presidential ticket to the South so the region can complete its eight years. This aligns with the party’s zoning arrangement and internal agreement,” he stated.

Kwankwaso also urged Nigerians and party supporters to begin mobilising ahead of the 2027 general elections by registering with the party.

The endorsement followed the NDC’s official adoption of a resolution reserving its 2027 presidential ticket for Southern candidates for a single four-year term. The motion was presented during the convention by Afam Victor Ogene.

NDC National Chairman, Moses Cleopas, explained that the zoning arrangement was designed to maintain regional balance within the opposition coalition. He added that the presidency would return to Northern Nigeria in 2031 after the South completes its tenure.

The party’s National Executive Committee also confirmed members of its National Working Committee during the convention.

Political observers believe the zoning arrangement could strengthen the chances of southern aspirants, including former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi, ahead of the party’s presidential primary.

The development comes amid increasing political realignments ahead of the 2027 elections, as opposition leaders continue efforts to form a united front against President Bola Tinubu and the ruling All Progressives Congress.

Meanwhile, Obi and Kwankwaso officially joined the NDC in Abuja and called on party members to avoid internal conflicts and focus on national development.

Obi stated that their decision to join the party was driven by the need for a stable political platform free from internal crises.
