The Anambra State chapter of the Nigeria Medical Association (NMA) has demanded the immediate release of Dr. Edwin Emegakor, who was reportedly abducted from his hospital on May 7.
The demand followed an Emergency General Meeting of the association held on Saturday, where members expressed concern over the rising insecurity in the state and its impact on healthcare workers.
In a communiqué signed by the NMA Chairman, Dr. Princeston Okam, and Secretary, Dr. Obiaeli Ifeanyi, the association warned that doctors across Anambra would shut down services if the abducted doctor is not released within 48 hours.
Dr. Emegakor, the Medical Director of Crown Multi-Specialist Hospital, Nkpor, was allegedly kidnapped by unidentified gunmen said to be dressed in security uniforms after attending to patients on Wednesday evening.
The association said the kidnappers had yet to contact the victim’s family, friends, or colleagues as of Saturday, adding that security agencies and relevant authorities had already been alerted to the situation.
Condemning the incident, the NMA described the abduction as unacceptable and called on the Anambra State Government and security agencies to urgently address the growing insecurity in the state.
“A 48-hour ultimatum is hereby issued to the government for the safe release of our colleague. If he is not freed within the stated period, doctors under the aegis of the NMA in Anambra will withdraw their services until he regains freedom,” the communiqué stated.
The association also announced plans to hold another emergency meeting after the ultimatum expires to assess the situation and decide on further steps.
While appreciating Governor Chukwuma Soludo and the Commissioner for Health, Dr. Afam Ben Obidike, for ongoing efforts to improve healthcare delivery, the NMA urged the government to strengthen security measures to protect residents and professionals in the state.
It further encouraged members to remain dedicated to providing quality and affordable healthcare services despite the prevailing security challenges.
