The arrest and detention of students at Ambrose Ali University, Ekpoma, Edo State, has sparked widespread concern, prompting the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Students’ Engagement, Hon. Comr. Asefon Sunday Dayo, to call for calmness and assure the students’ community of immediate government intervention.
The protest, initiated by students to express their legitimate concerns and demands regarding the continued insecurity in the student residential area, has raised significant concerns for His Excellency, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR. The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has made four urgent demands, including the immediate release of detained students, discontinuation of charges, an independent investigation into police conduct, and an end to the use of public institutions to repress law-abiding citizens.
Asefon assured NANS of President Tinubu’s commitment to addressing these issues, emphasizing the importance of dialogue and engagement between students and authorities. “The situation has underscored the importance of fostering an environment where students feel heard and valued in their pursuit,” he stated.
The government has assured proactive measures to engage with the students and resolve the grievances. The assurance has been welcomed by the students, who are awaiting the government’s response to their demands.
Aluta News reports that tensions appear to be easing as the government works to meet student demands.
