In a significant move to bolster law enforcement infrastructure, Akwa Ibom State Governor, Pastor Umo Eno, officially commissioned 1.4 kilometers of newly constructed internal roads at the State Police Command Headquarters in Ikot Akpan Abia, Uyo, on Tuesday. This project, however, represents more than just a ribbon-cutting ceremony; it is a cornerstone of a broader, strategic investment in the foundational systems that underpin public safety and economic stability in the state.
Governor Eno used the occasion to articulate a comprehensive vision for security sector support, announcing a forthcoming state-wide initiative to install modern lighting facilities at police stations across Akwa Ibom’s 31 Local Government Areas. “This is not an isolated project,” the Governor stated. “The road network we inaugurate today and the lighting systems we will deploy are critical force multipliers. They are designed to directly enhance operational logistics, deter criminal activity under the cover of darkness, and ultimately, improve the safety of both our officers and the citizens they protect.”
He offered profound commendation to the security agencies, framing their work as the essential bedrock of societal progress. “Your support has been massive. You work tirelessly to create the conducive environment necessary for sustainable development, investment, and communal harmony. The peace we enjoy today is a direct product of your dedication, and for that, we are profoundly grateful,” Governor Eno said.
The State Commissioner of Police, CP Baba Azare, provided a tactical breakdown of the project’s impact, moving beyond ceremonial appreciation to outline its practical benefits. He described the roads as “strategic assets” that would directly translate into enhanced police efficacy. “This infrastructure investment fundamentally improves our core functions. It reduces response times to emergencies, allows for faster mobilization of personnel and resources within the command complex, and increases the overall efficiency of our daily operations. This is a clear example of governance directly enabling effective policing,” CP Azare explained.
In a related development that signals deeper security architecture planning, Governor Eno also thanked the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Egbetokun, for approving the establishment of a Counter Terrorism Unit (CTU) in Nsit Ubium Local Government Area. This unit is poised to serve as a specialized rapid-response hub, addressing complex security threats and further decentralizing security command and control within the region. This approval underscores a collaborative federal-state approach to tackling emerging and sophisticated security challenges.
The event highlighted a model of proactive governance where infrastructure development is strategically aligned with security objectives. By focusing on the operational environment of the police—from the tarmac their vehicles travel on to the light that illuminates their stations—the Akwa Ibom State Government is making a tangible investment in the mechanics of peace and order, setting a precedent for how sub-national governments can actively partner with federal security institutions to safeguard lives and property.
