In a decisive move to safeguard lives during the high-risk festive season, the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) Kaduna State Command has mobilized a significant safety operation. Dubbed “Operation Zero-Tolerance,” this initiative represents a major escalation in road safety enforcement and emergency response capabilities for the region.
The Scale of Deployment: A Multi-Pronged Safety Net
Sector Commander Mr. Iliyasu Tijjani inaugurated the operation on Monday, December 15, 2025, outlining a formidable deployment strategy. From December 15, 2025, to January 15, 2026, the command will field:
- Personnel: 1,470 regular FRSC officers, bolstered by 401 Special Marshals, ensuring a pervasive presence.
- Logistics & Technology: 30 patrol vehicles, 2 motorcycles, 10 ambulances, and 3 tow trucks (including heavy-duty units). Notably, the operation will utilize drones for aerial surveillance, a modern tactic to monitor traffic flow and identify violations on major highways like the Kaduna-Abuja and Kaduna-Zaria roads.
This scale is not arbitrary. The yuletide period historically sees a surge in travel, leading to increased traffic density, driver fatigue, and risky behaviors. The FRSC’s preemptive, large-scale deployment is designed to create a deterrent effect and ensure rapid incident response.
Beyond Traffic Stops: The Strategic Focus Areas
Commander Iliyasu emphasized that the operation will target the root causes of fatal crashes. Enforcement will be particularly stringent on:
- Critical Public Transport Offences: Non-use of passenger manifests—a vital tool for accountability in the event of a crash.
- High-Risk Driver Behaviors: Over-speeding, dangerous overtaking, driving under the influence (DUI) of alcohol/drugs, and phone use while driving.
- Vehicle Safety Negligence: Tyre violations (often leading to blow-outs) and seatbelt non-compliance.
- Traffic Flow Disruptions: Lane indiscipline, route violations, and the dangerous overloading of both goods and passengers.
To give this enforcement teeth, the command will hold periodic mobile court sittings. This ensures swift adjudication of cases, moving beyond mere warnings to immediate legal consequences, thereby strengthening compliance.
Integrated Emergency Response: Clinics, Help Areas, and Public Tools
Recognizing that enforcement alone is insufficient, “Operation Zero-Tolerance” incorporates a robust humanitarian and technological framework:
- Traffic Camps & Help Areas: Strategically established at Rigachikun, Kwanan Farakwai, Birnin Yero, and Gonin Gora to manage gridlocks and provide immediate assistance.
- Roadside Clinics: Fully equipped facilities staffed with trained personnel to offer first-response medical care for minor injuries, benefiting both crash victims and local communities.
- Public Engagement Channels: The public is urged to use the FRSC’s toll-free emergency line 122, tune into National Traffic Radio 107.1 FM for real-time advisories, and utilize the FRSC mobile app. This app allows citizens to actively participate in safety by monitoring speed, identifying black spots, and reporting erring drivers.
In his closing remarks, Commander Iliyasu issued a stern charge to his personnel to uphold the highest standards of professionalism, warning against any conduct that could undermine the corps’ reputation. He extended seasonal greetings to the people of Kaduna while reaffirming the FRSC’s unwavering commitment to securing the roads throughout the festive period.
