Court Suspends Police Enforcement of Tinted Glass Permit Policy

The Federal High Court in Warri, Delta State, has issued an interim order suspending the enforcement of the tinted glass permit policy by the Nigeria Police Force and Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun. The court’s directive came after a suit filed by lawyer John Aikpokpo-Martins challenging the legality of the policy.

According to Senior Advocate Kunle Edun, SAN, who led the legal team for the petitioner, “The directive is a major step in ensuring that the rule of law is upheld while the substantive issues in the case are being determined.”

The court ordered the police to maintain the status quo and “respect judicial processes pending further proceedings in the matter.” This development has brought a temporary reprieve to motorists and vehicle owners who were worried about the implications of the policy.

The tinted glass permit policy requires vehicle owners with tinted windows to obtain a permit, which can be applied for online through the Police Specialised Services Automation Project portal. The Nigeria Police Force had announced the resumption of the issuance of tinted glass permits nationwide in April 2025, after suspending the scheme in 2022. The enforcement was initially set to begin on October 2, 2025.

The court’s intervention has provided a temporary stay of execution, allowing the matter to be further deliberated upon in court. As the case unfolds, the Nigeria Police Force and the Inspector-General of Police are expected to adhere to the court’s directive and suspend enforcement of the policy pending the outcome of the case.
