The National Civil Society Council of Nigeria (NCSCN) has commended the Senate Committee on National Security and Intelligence, led by Senator Shehu Buba, for its innovative approach to combating insecurity in Nigeria. The Committee’s balanced strategy, combining kinetic and non-kinetic methods, has yielded positive results, with relative stability observed in the last six months and normalcy returning to communities ravaged by violence and insurgency.

Ambassador Blessing Akinlosotu, Executive Director of the NCSCN, made the commendation during a state of the nation media briefing on Monday in Abuja, praising the Senate Committee’s leadership and commitment to promoting peace and stability in Nigeria.

The Senate Committee’s approach has been a very commendable effort, emphasizing dialogue, negotiations, and civic engagement to resolve crisis situations peacefully. With a global success rate of up to 94%, this approach has proven highly effective. The FBI’s Crisis Negotiation Unit, which has institutionalized dialogue with hostage-takers, serves as a notable example of its effectiveness. By prioritizing dialogue and civic engagement, the Committee fosters trust and cooperation, leading to more effective security Akinlosotu explained

According to NCSCN, a recent study by UNIDIR and ISS in the Lake Chad Basin region found that negotiated peace and non-kinetic methods are effective measures in combating terrorism. The research revealed that these approaches focus on addressing the root causes of conflict, such as poverty, unemployment, and social inequality, and have been successful in reducing violence and promoting stability in the region.

The success of amnesty programs in Nigeria serves as a testament to the effectiveness of negotiated peace and non-kinetic approaches in fighting banditry. These programs have helped to reintegrate former combatants and non-combatants into society, reducing the likelihood of them returning to violence.

The Civil Society Council has thrown its weight behind the Senate Committee’s efforts, praising Senator Buba’s leadership and commitment to promoting peace and stability in Nigeria. The Council has also condemned unwarranted attacks on the Committee and the National Security Adviser, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, describing them as “sinister attempts to discredit and undermine their achievements.”

The Senate Committee’s innovative approach to security offers hope for a more secure future for Nigeria. By continuing to prioritize dialogue, negotiations, and civic engagement, the Committee can build on its successes and create a more stable and peaceful environment for Nigerians.
