Nigeria’s fundamental issue not its constitution, says Nwoko

Abuja, July 18, 2025 Nigeria’s fundamental issue was not the constitution, but the lack of patriot leadership and accountability.

Sen. Ned Nwoko (APC-Delta), and member Senate Committee on Constitution Review, said this in an interview on Channels TV, monitored by the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), Abuja on Friday.

Nwoko, who representing Delta North Senatorial District and Chairman Senate Committee on Reparations and Repatriation, said structural reforms were also important.

He referenced the UK  as a model, saying in spite of not having a single codified constitution, the UK operates on a system of Acts of Parliament, yet governance runs smoothly because the people and institutions prioritise national interest.

He stressed the need to put Nigerian citizens first, emphasising that the average Nigerian should feel protected, provided for, and cared for.

He also called for the restructuring of national priorities to focus on education, healthcare, housing, and security.

“Governance must be measured not by the number of summits or speeches, but by tangible improvements in the lives of citizens,” he said.

The lawmaker also speaking on the creation of Anioma State, clarified that the agitation for Anioma predates his birth and has remained Nigeria’s oldest and most consistent call for state creation.

He dismissed attempts to politicise the agitation or reduce it to zoning battles, reiterating that all Anioma people, regardless of political leanings want a state of their own.
