Abuja, Nigeria – In a surprise move, Abdullahi Ganduje has resigned as the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), paving the way for a new leadership structure within the party.
Sources close to the party revealed that Ganduje’s resignation was as a result of mounting internal pressure and agitation from stakeholders in the North Central region, who had been clamoring for the return of the seat to the region.
Ganduje, who hails from Kano, was appointed as APC National Chairman in August 2023 after the resignation of Abdullahi Adamu. His tenure was marked by intense internal wrangling and criticism from various factions within the party.
According to insiders, Ganduje was persuaded to step down as part of the party’s strategy to replace him with a new chairman ahead of the 2027 general elections. Tanko Almakura, a former Governor of Nasarawa State and a founding member of the APC, is tipped to succeed Ganduje as the party’s National Chairman.
The APC is expected to hold an emergency National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting to announce an interim arrangement before a substantive chairman is elected or ratified at a national convention in December.
Ganduje’s resignation and Almakura’s expected appointment are seen as part of broader efforts by the APC leadership to douse internal tensions and reposition the party for the 2027 elections.
