A political firestorm is raging in the nation’s capital as Senator Aminu Waziri Tambuwal has launched a scathing attack on the Senate’s approval of the State of Emergency in Rivers State. According to Tambuwal, the Senate’s decision was a blatant violation of Section 305 of the 1999 Constitution, which requires a two-thirds majority for such a declaration.

Tambuwal, who represents Sokoto South in the 10th Senate, revealed that he was present during the closed session deliberation and witnessed firsthand the Senate’s failure to meet the required constitutional threshold. “It’s shocking that the Senate would disregard the Constitution so brazenly,” he exclaimed.

The senator also accused the National Assembly of ignoring its own precedents, citing previous instances of state-of-emergency declarations under Presidents Olusegun Obasanjo and Goodluck Jonathan. “What’s stopping the current National Assembly from referencing its own precedents?” Tambuwal asked, his voice laced with incredulity. “It’s part of the problem – a blatant disregard for the Constitution and the rule of law.”

The Senate’s decision has ignited a firestorm of criticism, with many lawmakers and civil society groups condemning the approval process as unconstitutional and undemocratic. The Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, has come under intense scrutiny for calling an emergency closed-door session, which many see as a deliberate attempt to circumvent the Constitution.

As the controversy rages on, Nigerians are left wondering if the Senate’s approval of the State of Emergency in Rivers State is a gross abuse of power. One thing is certain – this crisis has exposed the deep-seated flaws in Nigeria’s democratic system, and the nation waits with bated breath for the outcome.
