In a shocking display of double standards, the Federal Government announced on Wednesday that it will release the allocation for Rivers State to the newly appointed Administrator, Vice Admiral Ibok Ibas (retd), upon his resumption of office. This move comes after the legitimate leadership headed by Governor Siminalayi Fubara was denied access to the same funds, sparking widespread outrage and accusations of bias.
The decision has raised fundamental questions about the government’s commitment to democracy, the rule of law, and the principles of fairness and justice. By releasing funds to the new administrator while denying them to the democratically elected governor, the Federal Government appears to be undermining the democratic process and perpetuating a culture of impunity.
Vice Admiral Ibok Ibas (retd), a former Chief of Naval Staff, was appointed as the Administrator of Rivers State on March 18, 2025, following the controversial declaration of a state of emergency in the state by President Bola Tinubu. The move has been widely criticized as an attempt to usurp the powers of the elected government and impose federal control over the state.
The allocation for Rivers State has been a contentious issue, with Governor Fubara’s administration accusing the Federal Government of withholding funds due to the state. The latest development has only added to the tensions, with many calling for the government to clarify its position on the matter and respect the democratic mandate of the elected government.
