In a surprise move, Ahmed Rufai Abubakar, the Director-General of the National Intelligence Agency (NIA), has stepped down from his position. Abubakar disclosed that his resignation was due to a combination of personal family issues and a desire to maintain friendships, emphasizing that “nothing very serious” prompted his decision.

The NIA boss tendered his resignation at the Presidential Villa after a routine briefing with President Bola Tinubu. Abubakar expressed gratitude to the President for the opportunity to serve in the first 15 months of the new administration, having held the office since 2018.

“I had a discussion with Mr. President, and he understood my reasons perfectly,” Abubakar said. “I assured him that I will remain committed to supporting the country’s security efforts.”

Aluta News reports that Abubakar’s resignation has sparked interest, but his assurance of continued support to national security efforts provides a sense of continuity and stability.”

Abubakar expressed gratitude to President Tinubu for the opportunity to serve Nigeria under his “transformational leadership” for 15 months, a rare privilege. Initially appointed as NIA DG in 2018 by former President Muhammadu Buhari, Abubakar’s stay was extended in December 2021.

The briefing and subsequent resignation were described as a routine process, with Abubakar emphasizing his appreciation for the chance to serve. The development has sparked interest, but the seamless transition ensures continuity in the country’s intelligence operations.”
