The Appeal Court has delivered a verdict in the case involving 27 lawmakers in Rivers State who were sacked for defecting from their political party. While the court did not rule on the validity of their defection or the declaration of their seats as vacant, it clarified that the Federal High Court has the sole jurisdiction to decide on the legality of the defection.
As a result, the seats of the 27 lawmakers remain vacant, and the actions of the Rivers State House of Assembly, led by former Speaker Edison Ehi, in declaring their seats vacant, are still valid and subject to ongoing litigation.
Additionally, the tenure of local government chairmen, which has expired, cannot be extended and was never extended.
