BREAKING: Labour Union Considers Resuming Indefinite Strike as Tripartite Committee Recommends N62,000 Minimum Wage

The Tripartite Committee established by the Federal Government to address the National Minimum Wage has concluded negotiations, recommending N62,000 as the monthly minimum wage for civil servants. This decision was announced following an extensive meeting in Abuja on Friday night.

According to reports, while the Federal Government and the Organised Private Sector (OPS) have accepted the N62,000 offer as the new National Minimum Wage, the Organized Labour has declined the proposal, maintaining their demand for a minimum wage of N250,000.

This disagreement may prompt the labour unions to reinstate their indefinite strike, which was initially suspended following assurances from the government. The strike had significant support from various sectors, including aviation, maritime, and academia.

The labour unions have emphasized the need for a wage that aligns with the current economic realities and cost of living. The Federal Government’s offer of N62,000, although an increase from their initial proposal, still falls short of the labour unions’ expectations.

The negotiations highlight the ongoing struggle between the government and labour unions to find a mutually acceptable minimum wage. The labour unions remain resolute in their demands, and the situation may escalate into further industrial action if a consensus is not reached.
