The House of Representatives has urged the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) to formulate policies to regulate house rents and activities of landlords in Abuja.

In a resolution passed on Wednesday, the House called for the implementation of a monthly rent system to encourage an inclusive rental system and curb the arbitrary increase in house rent in the FCT.

Rep. Emmanuel Udo (PDP-Akwa-Ibom), who moved the motion, said Nigeria is ripe for an inclusive rental system that would reduce the housing burden on working-class families and offer affordable monthly rentals for low and middle-income earners.

The House mandated its Committee on FCT to collaborate with players in the real estate sector in the territory to work out a modality for monthly rent payments. The committee will also review the real estate sector and recommend effective policies to regulate the activities of landlords.

This resolution is a significant step towards addressing the long-standing issue of exorbitant house rents and arbitrary rent increases in the FCT.

By adopting this resolution, the House of Representatives has demonstrated its commitment to protecting the rights of tenants and promoting affordable housing in the nation’s capital.

“He emphasized that a monthly rent system would offer tenants greater flexibility, improved financial management, and a stable income stream, as well as reasonable options for moving out. Additionally, he called on the federal government to construct affordable housing for civil servants in Abuja, aimed at alleviating the burden of exorbitant rent payments.

The House adopted the motion and tasked the Committee on FCT to investigate the issue of arbitrary rent increases in the FCT. The Committee is expected to develop effective policies to regulate landlord activities and report back to the House within four weeks for further legislative action.”
