The FCT Emergency Management Agency FEMA is to partner with the Nigeria Council of Registered Insurance Brokers,(NCRIB), to mitigate the impact of disasters in the FCT.
The Acting Director General of the FCT Emergency Management Agency FEMA, Mr Mohammed Ibrahim Sabo, announced this when he played host to members of NCRIB who were on a courtesy visit to FEMA.
Mr Mohammed Sabo stated that insurance was crucial to disaster management and mitigation as insurers provide financial support to victims of disasters.
This support from insurance enhances overall resilience and aids in the recovery process after a disaster.
” When they insure their property, it assist them in recovering quickly from their loss. We will take the message to residents, particularly at the grassroots, to ensure that people insure their assets. “
Sabo further said that FEMA and NCRIB would embark on sensitization on the importance of insurance to markets and business places in the FCT.
Earlier, the Chairman of NCRIB, Mr Jide Bello, said the visit was to explore areas of collaboration between the two agencies.
He said that a major problem of disaster management in Nigeria was risk control.
” When people face disasters, they rely on government for relief materials, but because they are not insured, they’ll lose everything. While FEMA handles the physical part of disasters, insurance handles the financial.
He added that NCRIB recently carried out free eye screenings for 250 members of the National Union of Road Transport workers in Abuja as part of activities towards the installation its newly elected executives.
