Barely three hours after Department of State Services (DSS) said the suspended CBN Governor, Mr Godwin Emefiele, was not in its custody, it has confirmed that he is now for investigative reasons.
Dr Peter Afunanya, the Public Relations Officer of DSS, said this in a statement on Saturday in Abuja.
Afunanya had at about 10:46 a.m. said Emefiele was not with the DSS while responding to reports that the service had arrested the suspended CBN governor.
The DSS spokesman in the statement issued at about 2:18 p.m., confirmed that Emefiele was now in the DSS custody for some investigative reasons.
He urged the public, particularly the media, to apply utmost caution in the reportage and narratives concerning the arrest.
The statement said the suspension followed an ongoing investigation of his office and the planned reforms in the economy’s financial sector.
It directed the suspended CBN governor to immediately hand over the affairs of his office to the Deputy Governor, Operations Directorate.
The statement said the Deputy Governor would act as the CBN Governor, pending the conclusion of the investigation and the reforms.
Emefiele assumed office as CBN Governor in 2014 after succeeding Lamido Sanusi, who was also suspended from office by President Goodluck Jonathan, few months before the expiration of his tenure.
