The President of the Baptist Conference of the Federal Capital Territory, Dr Dogara Gwana, has admonished Nigerians to allow patriotism to guide their choice of candidates in the 2023 general election to move the country forward.
Gwana gave the advice in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on the sideline of the Pastor’s Leadership Summit organised by the FCT Baptist Conference on Friday in Abuja.
According to him, time for election is suppose to be an exciting time, because it is a time that new leaders are coming on board and injecting freshness into the system.
“In our situation in Nigeria, there seem to be tension in the air and so my expectation as a leader is that people should go out without fear and vote from a perspective of patriotism.
“Nigerians should vote people that are ready and committed to build Nigeria. Vote people that have the character, competence, capacity, compassion and patriotism to move the country from where we are to where we should be.
“This is because, the role of a leader is to move people from where they are to where they should be. That is what we are looking towards to, that God should give us such leaders.
“I also want to appeal to Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) not to be partisan; don’t succumb to pressure. Politicians are desperate people, especially politics in Nigeria where a lot of money is involved,” he said.
The president of the FCT Baptist Conference explained that some people were desperate to get what they want, adding that INEC should be neutral, honest, committed to deliver a free, fair and acceptable election for Nigerians.
“We are also praying for INEC, its Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, its officials who work with him and those that will be sent across the country. God will keep them as they stand strong to do the right things,” said Gwana.
