Officers of Peace Corps of Nigeria have received unprecedented empowerment intended to economically strengthen them nationwide.

Prof. Dickson Akoh, National Commandant of Peace Corps disclosed this at the first phase of their three -day training programme on the use of technology on Tuesday in Abuja.

Akoh said officers of the corps, including board members, national executive council and commandants of 36 states of the federation and the FCT had been empowered with three thousand dollars worth of zuga coin.

He said a guest, at their 24th anniversary got inspired by their activities and promised each member of the corps in Nigeria, a token of three thousand dollars worth of zuga coin.

“This money is not money that we release to them in cash, it’s money that he wanted to be created online.”

The National Commandant explained that the money was to be used for their international training which had to do with modern technology.

He said the Corps engaged African Digital Literacy Scheme, reputed for training people on digital technology.

“They are here today and it is a training that take six months, they engaged our people before we came here.

“This first batch, they’d been training but the practical aspect of it, that they need to interact, it’s what gives birth to why we are here today, ” he said.

He said the officers present at the training represented all local governments in Nigeria, including the national officers who were also present to facilitate the programme.

Akoh said the training had been done and the officers were awaiting certification and a portal would be created for them to continue the training virtually.

“About 5,000 that were trained this first phase, their account would be credited with three thousand U.S dollars of Zuga coin for individuals to continue with their business.

“So, it’s a sort of an empowerment programme that is incorporated in our objectives of the organisation,” Akoh said.

He expressed satisfaction that the doctorate degree holders, the Bachelor degree holders as well as the H.N.D holders among the Corps members were beneficiaries.

“I feel this empowerment programme is real, it’s unprecedented and it’s intended to economically empower our officers nationwide, ” he said.

Akoh also expressed regrets that in spite of the achievements recorded by the Corps, “we are not accorded the desired recognition and patronage by the government.”
