IPPIS: ABU Sacks all contract and Visiting Lecturers

The management of Ahmadu Bello University (ABU) Zaria has terminated the appointment of all academic staff on contract appointment at the university.

The termination of appointment which takes effect from June 15th, 2020 also includes all visiting lecturers at the university.

Official communication from the office of the Registrar and secretary to the council, states that “the management regrets to inform all staff members on contract, visiting and month-to-month appointments that their appointments are hereby terminated.

“One month notice of termination of appointment is hereby given with effects from 15th June 2020. Letters of termination of the appointment of the concerned staff members will be dispatched soon.

No reason was given for the action. But according to sources in the institution, the sack is connected to the lingering issues between the federal government and the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).

According to a senior professor in the faculty of life sciences, the sack of the part-time lecturers was due to consistent refusal of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) to comply with Federal government directive to enroll on the Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System (IPPIS).

“This is the sad fact of IPPIS and part of what ASUU was is trying to avoid. Unfortunately, we are going to lose some very important and vital staff who are highly skilled in their areas and who will be difficult to replace in the short run. Sadly, the students will be the main victims of this action because it will be hard to get a replacement.” He concluded

Some of the affected lectures include senior professors who were already retired but engaged on contract services to render prowess in their field, Aluta News learned.
