The National Commission for Persons with Disabilities (NCPWDs) has called on the Federal Character Commission (FCC) to ensure five per cent employment opportunities for People with Disabilities (PWDs).
The call is in a statement signed by the commission’s Head of Media and Publicity, Mr Mbanefo John-Michael, on Friday in Abuja.
John-Michael, said that the Executive Secretary of the commission, Mr James Lalu, made the appeal during a National Technical Working Group Meeting on Access to Employment for PWDs.
According to him, it is in consonance with provisions of the 2018 Disability Commission Act.
The meeting had in attendance the Federal Character Commissioner, Amb. Ginika Tor; Civil Society Organisations, Rule of Law and Anti Corruption (Rolac) as well as staff of NCPWD.
Lalu enjoined FCC to use the virtue of its mandate to ensure that PWDs got five per cent target on employment opportunities across the six geo- political zones and 36 states of the Federation
He also expressed delight at the turn out of the meeting and the commitments shown by participants as he further charged members to be more strategic in their approach while brainstorming on issues.
He further charged members to come out with a commendable template which would accommodate PWDs across the 36 states of the federation.
Lalu also charged the committee to make themselves watchdogs over Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) in terms of employment and to safeguard interests of persons with disabilities.
In her goodwill message, the FCC Federal Commissioner affirmed the committee’s readiness to give sufficient assistance to NCPWDs to achieve beyond the five per cent employment provisions for PWDs.
Also, Mrs Uche Nwokedi of Rolac, promised to provide the commission with data that emanated from the assessment conducted across the country to ensure that no one was left behind.
