INEC: Group lauds Yakubu for stepping aside in spite re-appointment
The Centre for Transparency Advocacy (CTA) has commended INEC Chairman Prof. Mahmood Yakubu for following due process by handing over and stepping aside in spite of his re-appointment by President Muhammadu Buhari.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) recalls that Buhari had on Oct. 27, reappointed Yakubu, a prof. of Political History and International Studies for a second tenure of five years subject to confirmation by the Senate.
The Executive Director, CTA, Ms Faith Nwadishi made the commendation in a statement in Abuja, on Monday.
“The Centre for Transparency Advocacy notes with delight that Yakubu even though re-appointed has followed due process by handing over and stepping down albeit temporarily before his confirmation.
“Due process has been his hallmark, hence the tremendous achievements and progress made so far in INEC in the last five years.
“CTA commends this gesture and hopes that this sets an example for other public office holders to emulate and uphold the tenets of democracy in Nigeria.
“We wish him well and further call on the Senate to expedite the process of confirming him so as to start early in the works ahead.
“Especially, the commencement of the Continuous Voter Registration across the country and preparations toward all outstanding off-seasons elections and the 2023 General Elections.’’ (NAN)
