EndSARS protesters arraigned before FCT magistrate court

No fewer than six suspects have been arraigned before the FCT Magistrate Court for their involvement in the recent protest at the gate of the National Assembly Complex in Abuja.

The suspects who were slammed with four counts charges of criminal conspiracy, unlawful assembly, inciting the public, public disturbance and public nuisance, all pleaded not guilty to all charges.

The protesters, Oluwatoyin Adeniji, Yashidu Bashiru, Abdulsalam Zuberu, Kabiru Kazali, Paul Akinwumi and Chomo, were however denied bail application as the Police Prosecutor, John Ijegbami, argued that the not all misdemeanour offences were bail-able, especially when such offence borders on national security

Defence counsel, Tope Akinyode, had earlier prayed the court to grant the protesters bail, seeing that the offence were mostly that of misdemeanour.

The presiding Magistrate, Abdulrazak Eneye, said he rejected the defence counsel’s oral application because it was not properly premised on the extant law. He however directed that a written application be made and submitted to the court within the time allowed by the law.

Though proper hearing on the case was set for January 25, 2021, the suspects could be looking at up to three years behind bars if found guilty, as the Magistrate hinted that offence of such magnitude carry a maximum punishment of three years jail term.
