Comment suggestive of Nigeria breakup: NYCN urges Osinbanjo, Mustapha to resign
The National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN) has demanded the immediate resignation of Vice President Prof Yemi Osinbanjo and Secretary to the Government of Federation SGF, Boss Mustapha over comment that Nigeria has cracked and will lead to its break up
The statement signed by Solomon Adodo, NYCN President was made available to Aluta News on Tuesday in Abuja.
Adodo said although this was not the first time such assertion was being made, but he however found it unacceptable that such comment would come from someone who occupies the second highest position in the country particularly and most disturbing on a strategic occasion to commemorate Nigeria’s independence anniversary.
According to him, every empirical reasoning thus suggests that the Vice President does not believe in the unity of the country he was duly elected overwhelmingly to deputize President Muhammadu Buhari.
He said that this comment was coming at a time some elders of the South West extraction called for the balkanization of the country, leaves a bitter taste in the mouth.
Adodo said: “While we acknowledge that the country is faced with a number of challenges, we are also aware that concerted efforts are equally being made by various stakeholders in the land
“These include the NYCN and the Federal Government to ensure that Nigeria is firmly positioned on the path of development and ensure that her unity as a nation remains intact.
“We are not unaware of the fact that the beauty and strength of Nigeria lies in her diversity and as such any attempt to truncate these virtues will affect the very foundation on which the nation was founded.
“We feel highly discouraged, dismayed and disenchanted that such an inflammatory statement is coming at a time when the National Youth Council of Nigeria is working assidously to reorientate the Nigerian Youth and instill the culture of patriotism in them.
“The statement is a denigration of our sacrificial efforts.
“NYCN,therefore, demand that the Vice President immediately resign from his office as he has publicly, through his utterance, demonstrated that he lacks faith in the country and does not share the same vision of national rejuvenation as President Muhammadu Buhari does.
“The council also demands the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Boss Mustapha to also take the path of honour and resign.
“The SGF, who represented the Vice President at the event where he made the comment on behalf of the Vice President equally lacks faith in the country he sits as the third highest officer in the Executive arm of government.
“NYCN doed not feign ignorance of the plethora of challenges troubling the country, tailored principally along ethnic and religious lines.
“The duo of the Vice President and the Secretary to the Government of the Federation should not be making comments that would worsen the situation.
” No sane government would want to see the country break up under its nose. The least expected of the Vice President is to reel out efforts the government is making to keep the country at peace, united and prosperous while providing the firm leadership needed for other stakeholders to align and play their respective roles.
“We are confident that Nigeria will overcome every challenge facing her, NYCN shall not sit by and allow anyone toy with the unity of the country and the sacrificial labour’s of our heroes past irrespective of the lofty office such a person occupies. The unity and peace of Nigeria is greater than any individual.
“The Vice President and the Secretary to the Government of the Federation should resign or come out in clear terms to tell Nigeriand, their mission.
” We shall be left with no other option than to embark on mass action against the duo alongside other measures within the precincts of the law to ensure that our call is heeded and speedily so” he said.
