NASARAWA STATE YOUTH AND THE WAY FORWARD: AMIDST PROGRESSIVE GOVERNANCE LED BY ENGR. ABDULLAHI A. SULE
Amidst administration characterised by favorable attitude toward industrial society, belief in youth ability to improve the environment and conditions of life, belief in an obligation to intervene in economic and social affairs, belief in the ability of experts and in the efficiency of government, belief in the peace and security of the state and, belief in establishment and reactivation of government institutions and structures in a sustainable working system.
The governor’s belief in youth ability to improve the environment and conditions of life will not come to limelight in an atmosphere of instigation of leadership crises among the youth, inadequate coordination and supervision of Youth activities by Commissioner of Youth and Sport Development and lack of cross transmission of Youth plights and governor’s plans by the SSA and SA to the governor on Youth and Sport Development.
Majority of the youth attribute these development to either ignorant of responsibility, misplacement of priority, negligence of duty, personal interest or incapacitation from the path of the commissioner, SSA and SA on YOUTH.
Consequently, the acclaimed comrades among the youth of Nasarawa state resort to politics of godfatherism thereby relegated to political servitude, proliferation of youth organizations sponsored by politicians against the statutory umbrella body and mouthpiece of the youth (NYCN), destroying the overall unity and productive capacity of the youth while, actualizing their personal interest has been the game.
As it is often said “the qualities of tomorrow’s leaders lie in the characters of today’s YOUTH” and, failure to engaged and properly coordinate and supervise the shaping of this youth by appropriate institutions envisage doom for the future.
Having appreciated the pragmatic leadership and administrative focus of governor Abdullahi A. Sule, what is indisputably worthy to note is that, there is poor or inadequate youth participation in decision-making in this administration.
To his excellency, the executive governor of nasarawa state, I put it to you that, we have but pocket of youth in your administration as aides who’s appointment were mostly viewed as a way of compensating some politicians and individual youth thus only representing them self or their masters rather than the youth constituency.
Youth as catalyst of change, drivers of social cohesion, Pillar’s of economic development and champions of good governance whose active and meaningful participation in decision making should not be overlooked.
Nasarawa youth are passionate, creative and capable but we need more space to expose our innovativeness, provide solutions, work and build an atmosphere that suits all and prepares the future generations to not face the same insecurities, imbalances and corruption we see today.
We want to continue building on the strengths of our predecessors and participate in investing in and sustaining our communities. Having active youth participation in governance will avail the youth the opportunity to learn ethical values that can help to distinguish right from wrong and prepared the youth for future leadership.
To increase inclusive representation and consultation with youth groups in decision-making at all levels including particularly when negotiating and implementing peace agreements, to take into account, as appropriate, the participation and views of youth, recognising that their marginalisation is detrimental to building sustainable peace in all societies.
My dear partners in progress and leaders of tomorrow, let me assure us that we still have a very elastic future before us. We have a world of opportunities to print our foot in the sands of time.
I speak to the idealistic, patriotic, compassionate and sportsmanlike who are capable of dreaming high and positive dreams. Lets equip our self to play the role of an achiever and a nation builder.
Creation of multiple youth groups with identical blueprint, self declaration as youth leaders and assassinating fellows character will only weaken our strength, adulterate our conscience and endanger our future.
Though, the spade must be called a spade! We all know each other, We know our history, We know our challenges as youth, nasarawa belongs to all of us, it is our responsibility to contribute our quota towards its development.
We must make a choice of approach to fix our house, the youth constituency, either through diplomacy, legal or violence to fish out bad leadership and bad elements among us.
