COVID-19: Declare lockdown on FCT now—AUPCTRE urges FG

The Chairman, Corporate Affairs Commission(CAC) branch of Amalgamated Union of Public Corporations Civil Service Technical and Recreational Services Employees (AUPCTRE) Comrade Ibrahim Kirfi, has called for the immediate lockdown of FCT.
This is with a view to curtailing the spread of Coronavirus Pandemic in the territory before it gets out of control.

Kirfi made the call during an exclusive interview with Aluta News on Sunday in Abuja

He called on the Nigeria Labour Congress( NLC), to do something very fast to prevent the working class in Abuja from contracting the coronavirus infection which the World Health Organisation (WHO) has declared as pandemic.

According to the Chairman, since NLC happens to be the umbrella body under which his union (AUPCTRE) operates, it has become expedient for NLC to demand from Federal Government to declare complete lockdown on Abuja.
He noted that the current work at home order for officers on grade level 12 below might not effectively contain the deadly disease.

He expressed concern that if the Chief of Staff to the President, Malam Abba Kyari and some prominent personalities in the country could test positive to Covid-19,” who then is a Senior servant” that could not come in contact with the disease.

Kirfi berated some religious leaders for misleading their gullible followers in holding congregational prayers despite government order and directive against such large gathering.

The chairman reminded such clerics that said that COVID-19 ” doesn’t respect ranks, age, race, faith class and so on.”

He added that the daily increase of Covid-19 cases in Nigeria was frightening, adding the way and manner it was networking across Abuja and Lagos showed that if proactive steps and decisions were not taken, “Nigerians may resort to Italian model-prayer.”

He further advised government not just to lockdown Abuja but deal decisively with any group or groups that disobey its order, in the interest of public health.
