GBV: FG, UNESCO, others unveils package for basic education in Nigeria

Abuja, Dec. 8, 2021 (NAN) The Federal Ministry of State Education, UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), and others unveiled a package on “Gender based violence Information” for basic education in Nigeria.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that a 13 episode tv drama was also unveiled on Wednesday in Abuja to tackle the issues of Gender base violence (GBV).

Mr Chukwuemeka Nwajiuba, Minister of State Education said that the Gender based violence information basic education is for school as it is important to educate students on the effects of GBV.

“We have disarticulate most of the materials in genders based violence and put them in a readable form to take it into our classroom”

“Because our understanding is that the education of the girl child is very important so we will make sure the girl child stays in school and provide for her every support we can”

“We also want to educate others to appreciate that the same rights they have the girl child also have so as a young boy it’s better to be educated so that he can know what to do and what not to do”, he said.

In her remarks, Mrs Moma Enang, Rep. of the Director UNESCO Regional Office Abuja, said that the package is very important as it will help in promoting gender equality and curb violence against women.

Enang also noted that the 13 episodes drama was produced by Wale Adenuga under the Spotlight initiative and marks the 16 day of activism against gender based violence.

“The objective of this initiative is to have a country where women and girls live a life that is free from all forms of violence and harmful practices”

“The spotlight initiative will enhance gender equality and reduce gender based violence” she said.

According to Mrs Hadizah Dorayi, The National Program Director of Spotlight Initiative the aim of this project is to raise awareness for the younger generation.

“It is very necessary that each time we talk about gender based violence children should know what to do and where to seek help from”,

“This is why we are produced this materials targeted at children from primary 1-3 and primary 4-6, and Jss 1-3 and made the materials to vary from this three different sets,”

“We also made them child friendly with pictures, stories and comics to make it more intriguing to them.”

Hadizah also stated that Spotlight is working on including this initiative in the curriculum of the basic education.

“We have training with teachers to be able to disseminate information from the materials and there was a field testing of the materials”,

“In schools across the 6 geopolitical zones so that we know for sure that it sits well with the target audience.

Mr Noah Emmanuel, President of Non-Governmental Association for Literacy Support Services (NOGALSS) in his remarks commended all the agencies for their support and supervision to ensure that the package was a success.

He also added that the Association is proud to be part of the Spotlight initiative to produce the packages in order to inform and educate children in basic education.

NAN also reports that the Spotlight initiative is implemented in Adamawa, Cross River, Ebonyi, Lagos, Sokoto and FCT. (NAN)
