The traditional ruler of Obosi Kingdom in Idemili North Local Government Area of Anambra State, Igwe Chidubem Iweka III, has proposed the introduction of traditional oaths for public officers as an additional measure to combat corruption in Nigeria.
Igwe Iweka, who is also the Chairman of the Anambra State Traditional Rulers Council, made the proposal during the commissioning of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) Awka Zonal Directorate in Anambra State.
The monarch said traditional oaths, which remain widely respected and feared in many Nigerian communities, could serve as a deterrent to public officials who might be tempted to divert public funds for personal gain.
He argued that incorporating traditional institutions into the fight against corruption could complement existing measures adopted by law enforcement agencies to tackle the menace.
According to him, despite efforts by anti-corruption agencies, the country has yet to achieve the desired level of success in addressing corruption, making it necessary to explore additional approaches rooted in Nigeria’s cultural values and traditions.
Igwe Iweka also advocated the inclusion of anti-corruption education in the curricula of primary and secondary schools across the country.
He said educating children about the dangers and consequences of corruption from an early age would help instil integrity, accountability and responsible conduct in future generations.
The monarch maintained that combining traditional values with formal anti-corruption strategies and early moral education could strengthen the fight against corruption, particularly in public service.
His proposal comes amid ongoing efforts by anti-graft agencies to promote transparency, accountability and responsible management of public resources in Nigeria.
